Who We Are
The Hoover City Schools Foundation is made up of an executive director, a Board of Directors and our newest volunteer group, Friends of the Foundation. A Student Board represents the Foundation at various functions and events throughout the community. In addition, we invite our Alumni to join to support their alma maters.

Paul Dangel
President
As director of Sales and Marketing for Hyatt Regency Birmingham – The Wynfrey Hotel, Paul Dangel and his team are responsible for bringing events and conventions to Hoover’s largest hotel. A graduate of Western Carolina University with a sport management degree, Paul worked for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, the New York Islanders hockey team, eventually segueing into hotel and convention center management. He relocated to Birmingham 20 years ago with the Sheraton Birmingham and was part of the opening team for the Westin Birmingham. Paul is a member of Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce where he serves as immediate past chairman of the board and is vice chair of Leadership Hoover. Residents of Trace Crossings, Paul and his wife, Sandy, have an eighth grade daughter, Shelby, who attends Bumpus Middle School. “The Foundation is important because it fills a need the city can’t necessarily fill,” he says. “The stories we hear about the Foundation’s work in the classroom are so meaningful and impactful. I’m looking forward to serving on the board and helping to fulfill its mission.”
Bevin Tomlin
Vice President
Bevin Tomlin casually throws into conversation that she and her husband, Adam, lived in China for three semesters after college where they taught English and pursued mission work. “It was amazing to be thrown into another culture,” she says. “It was the one time in our lives where we lived our mission mindset. We want to include our children in that pursuit as they become older.” The Northport, Ala., native graduated from the University of Alabama with both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Finance.
Bevin is a Strategy and Finance Manager for Alabama Power Company. “We provide transformative customer solutions, ,” she says. Bevin’s biggest job is mother to her three children: daughter Taylor and sons Baron and Brooks. They are the reason that she joined the Foundation’s Board. “We will be in the school system for the next 13 years, so I wanted to find a way to help support and make an impact,” she says. In their spare time, the family enjoys the children’s activities, their neighborhood pool at Scout Creek and traveling as much as possible.
Shilpa Gaggar
Secretary
Shilpa Gaggar is a native of New York. After graduating from pharmacy school at the University of Michigan, she moved to the Birmingham area in 2001 for husband Amit’s residency in pulmonary critical care at UAB. Shilpa spent 13 years as a pharmacist at UAB Hospital and has worked an infusion clinic pharmacist at Kirklin Clinic since 2014. After moving to Hoover in 2006, Shilpa got involved with PTO. She then joined the Foundation Board in 2019 and is looking forward to continue helping the Student Board, getting more insight into how the Foundation helps the district and seeing teachers’ ideas come to fruition through the grants given. In her spare time, Shilpa enjoys singing with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra Chorus and being involved with Hoover Ahead, an organization promoting diversity, inclusion and equity regarding education in the community. Shilpa and Amit have two children, Akash, a junior at Hoover High School and Riya, a 7th grader. The family enjoys traveling and keeping up with the kids’ many activities.
April Lawrence
Treasurer
Although she grew up in Hoover, Treasurer April Lawrence really wasn’t involved in the community until she had children of her own. Once she was introduced to the Hoover City Schools Foundation, April knew she had found her place. “I’m looking forward to seeing the process of how the community comes together and fills those gaps in the funding the district doesn’t have,” she says. “It’s neat to see the ideas the teachers have and how the Foundation can assist them in making them come to fruition.” April received both her undergraduate and master’s degrees from Auburn University in Accountancy. She is currently a senior pharmacy consultant at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. She and her husband Steve, have a set of 12th grade twins, John and Ava, and a 9th grade daughter, Amelia. An avid runner and member of the Birmingham Track Club, April loves Spartan races and outdoor activities.
